Westfalia SO33 Sub hatch

So with Si selling the oval, it was time to look for the new project.

“I first heard about this bus while we were in Spa. I got a picture message sent to me by Gareth Smith.
Well that was it, I had been looking for an original pint bus for some time. But nothing had come up “just right”.

The bus is a 1962 SO33 Westfalia in original paint Mouse Grey and Pearl White. The interior is amazingly complete and along having a sub hatch (all so33 had a sub hatch) I had to have it.

A couple of weeks passed and after looking at the same old photos I had to go and view it. i’ll let the photos tell you the rest.

Its completely original and is now having a new rear corner and batter tray courtesy of Matt Smitt (Smiths VW Cornwall).

Im sure looking at most of our club cars you will be able to guess how close this bus will sit to the floor….

Le bug show – Spa Belgium

We all just got back from what we categorically agreed was the best show we have ever visited.
1000 miles, 6 aircooled cars and a bunch of mates.

– Not one breakdown (just some repairs at spa)

– 4 tanks of fuel each (9 for stef)

– 3 pairs of tyres

– 1 clutch fork

– 1 hub seal

– a couple of litres of oil….

– 1 inflatable doll

More pictures and a small write up will follow, for now its back to work.

Le bug show burn out

Progress on Pete’s fire bus

Pete writes…

So today I got my beloved burnt out bus back from the breakdown yard and got my first chance to look at it since I left it burnt out on the side of the A45 in Northampton.

It took a bit of effort o get it off the flatbed due to its lowness and 2 melted rear tyres but with help from a forklift raising the back end and the driver dragging the flatbed away from under it we got it off.

Got it straight up on the axel stands to see what it was like underneath.

 Image

Not too bad….anything rubber or plastic related had just melted, cv boots, flexi hoses for the breaks etc, but the gearbox and main chassis looked ok if not a bit scorched. The bottom half of the engine looked ok too, the top was pretty bad though.

The cab had completely melted, it was still attached to the inlet manifold but it looked like death.

 Image

All the electrical wires where stripped of their coating and the battery was completely melted as well with just the lead plates remaining.

We left the underside for now and concentrated on the interior.

It was really bad in there. Completely gutted, everything was bunt and it stank!

 Image

First job was to remove all our clothes beading etc from the back. There wasn’t much to save, if it wasn’t burnt it was soaking wet from the water used to put out the fire. Certain things where ok, James’ shaving bag which had shaving foam, moisturiser etc in it was a bit bunt the contents was completely fine.

After that we moved onto anything that was under the seat and got the seat out itself.

 Image

With the seat out we shoved up the rest of the shit and pulled of what was left off the floor.

 Image

The wooden base underneath seamed in quite good condition!

After that we got all the door cards off and pulled out the dash and the front seat.

ImageImageImageImageImage

With all the mess cleaned out the back.

We then took it round the back for a good blast with the pressure washer to dry and remove some of the dirt.

 ImageImageImage

After this we when rolled it across into Mikes workshop to start the strip down of the engine.

Some of the items that kind of survived the fire

Pete’s Bus

As many people know. Our mate and dta member Pete Townley’s bus had a horrendous fire during our drive back from Bug Jam. Pete and James both escaped un harmed.

In Petes words

“Hi everyone, thanks for all the messages and support everyone has shown.
Until I get the bus back and have a proper look at it I don’t know what caused the fire.
Somehow some of the fuel escaped from the tank and got on the the engine. All I remember was that we where going down the A45 just before the junction with the M1 and there was quite a steep down hill part and just after going down that I could smell fuel. Next thing I know I loose all power, no response from the engine at all. So I start pull over to the slow lane, stop and try turning it over. I could see the smoke starting to pour from the vents and that’s when I knew something was seriously wrong. Got out with my friend James to see that the underside was now alight!! Thankfully I was not alone as my mate Dave was following and had pulled over and was already on the phone to the fire brigade. We tried to put it out with a small fire extinguisher but it didn’t really do much.
I this point all I knew was we had to get back quick.

The worst part was having to stand there and watch something that you’ve put so much time into burn and know that there’s nothing you can do – it was horrible.

The fire brigade we quick to respond and where there in a couple of minuets and had it under control but it was to late, the damage was already done.

All of the DTA guys which we where convoying with had turned around and come back by this point and this the fire now out we got a chance to see how bad it was.
It was really bad, the interior is gutted, all the original headliner door cards and dash where toast. The carb was melted and all the wiring stripped of its plastic coating. As for the bottom end of the engine and gear box, I’m hopping they’ve survived to some extent.

I should be getting it back tomorrow when we can asses the damage better.

Untill then I’de like to thank all of the DTA guys especially Dave Eadon who called the fire brigade and the couple the bug who pulled up and lent us there fire exhauster.(sorry I didn’t catch you names)

As long as there are no major issues I am determined to get this bus up and running gain as soon as possible, hopefully for Action so keep your eyes pealed for it!!!!!!

Will also hopefully be doing a rebuild thread on here
